Coastrange Sculpin (Cottus aleuticus)

Identification: Anterior part of body heaviest. Overall colouration brown or grey with darker blotches, lighter on sides and white below. Two or three dark saddle-like patches on dorsal surface. Light marks on back jaw just in front of caudal fin, first dorsal fin without distinct black spots. Anal fin about equal to head length. Adult length about 76-102 mm.

Life History: Spawns in streams in spring, likely between February and mid-June. Fecundity may be up to 800 eggs per female. Eggs are laid on the undersurface of a rock, and then guarded by the male. Adults are generally found in riffles, occasionally in lakes.

Feeding: Feeding usually occurs at night. The main food items are aquatic insects, benthic invertebrates, and salmon eggs. Also, eggs and fry of salmon.
