Peamouth (Mylocheilus caurinus)

Identification: Brightly coloured with localized areas of red at the angles of the mouth and along sides. Body generally silvery with a dark back and two dark lateral stripes. Breeding individuals have red lower lips and well-developed lateral red strips. Dorsal fin base much shorter than head length. Hind margin of dorsal fin does not overlap anal fin. Adult length between 102-152 mm.

Life History: Found in rivers and lakes in northwestern North America. Spawning occurs in May and June in shallow shore waters of lakes.

Feeding: Mainly insectivorous, feeding on a variety of aquatic insects and their larvae, also some terrestrial insects, planktonic crustaceans, molluscs small fishes.
